The universal remote control accessory for iPhone and iPod touch

The FLPR is easy to set up and use, and worked with almost every button on almost every remote I tested. And I could have lived with the inflexible macros, button layouts, and labels. Unfortunately, the functions it was unable to learn were functions I can’t do without and the main reason its rating isn’t even higher.

Turn your iPhone or iPod Touch into the ultimate universal remote. The FLPR ($80) from New Potato Technologies is an attachment that plugs into either handheld, allowing it to sync up with and control any electronic device that uses an infrared remote control. An onboard database of 14,000 products lets you select items you own that you want to control with the device.

cnet You don't have to spend time learning your existing remotes button by button
New Potato says that unlike other universal remote solutions for iPhone and iPod Touch the Flipr works with hundreds of brands of devices out of the box. "Flipr's extensive database of over 14,000 preprogrammed remote control codes means that you don't have to spend time learning your existing remotes button by button," the company notes. If you're hoping for a Logitech Harmony-like experience, the Flipr isn't there yet, though you can program in some macros to turn on multiple devices in sequence. New Potato says that it plans to add more functionality in future upgrades to the Flipr app, but for now the software isn't nearly as robust as Logitech's.
macworld Setting up is fast and easy...it took less than five minutes to get everything recognised and working.
I spend my life playing with gadgets and gizmos that promise the earth and fail to deliver, so it was a wonderful surprise to hook up the easy-to-use FLPR from New Potato. It’s an infrared gizmo that easily turns your iPhone or iPod touch into a universal remote capable of replacing nearly all the remotes in your home entertainment setup. The FLPR itself is about the size of a 20c coin. You simply plug it into the dock connector, download the free app from the App Store, go through the setup process and sit back and enjoy yourself.

gizmodo Use Your iPhone As Your Remote Control? There’s A Peripheral For That
Gazing at an iPhone or iPod Touch’s glass screen, some of us dream about apps, while others dream about video podcasts. Others think about porn. But others – like the folks at New Potato Technologies – look at the iPhone’s screen and think: “that would make a great universal remote”, and then create an R peripheral to make the idea possible. Called the FLPR (like “Flipper”, except without the vowels, see?), the device plugs into the bottom of your iPhone and beams out IR signals to your devices. But it is only half the solution – you’ll need to download the free FLPR app from the app store, program in your AV products (there are over 34,000 codes in the app, which should cover all the manor electronic brands and products), and then you’re good to go. The FLPR has a 10 metre range, which is about the same as most IR remotes anyway.
ilounge you can just launch the app, tell it which devices you’re using, and start controlling them right away...
The key to FLPR’s value is the app, which New Potato claims has 14,000 remote control codes built in—this means that in many cases, you can just launch the app, tell it which devices you’re using, and start controlling them right away. New Potato turns the iPhone or iPod touch screen into a scrollable replacement for individual remotes, letting you press a top-of-screen icon to swap between the remotes, and then scroll up or down through each remote’s buttons. In our testing with a set of five different devices, we found that the FLPR app properly controlled three without any customization—a Sony AV receiver, a Panasonic TV, and an Apple TV—but had problems with a Toshiba DVD player and a Microsoft Xbox 360, both of which appeared to be compatible given the app’s list of supported devices. When there’s a compatibility issue, New Potato provides a custom feature that lets you teach FLPR the commands for your remote. FLPR merits our limited recommendation, and may be worthy of mainstream attention if its price falls and software improves; PowerA falls into our “okay” rating category, and needs more considerable work in the software category.
611connect The name is terrible, but the hardware isn't
The name is terrible, but the hardware isn't. The FLPR plugs into your headphone jack like the RedEye, and performs a lot of the same features through its built-in infrared port. It has over 14,000 device codes built-in to the free iPhone app. What separates this device, however, is that it costs $79.99. Thankfully, since all of the respective iPhone apps are free, you can test them out to your liking and make a hardware decision from there.
isource FLPR works as advertised...the remote has been a joy to use
I could simply have said that the FLPR works as advertised and that really would have been enough. I haven ‘t had any major issues with the device or the app and despite my complaints about the packaging and UI skins, the remote has been a joy to use. The only sticking point is the $80 price tag, which I still find rather hefty, even after having had two weeks to get used to the device. Then again, if you compare the price of the FLPR to other touchscreen remotes (usually around $200+ if you look at Logitech Harmony remotes) and add the fact that the FLPR leverages a device you already own, New Potato ‘s chosen price might not be so bad after all.

The interface of the FLPR iPhone/iPod touch app is extremely easy to use. You can also personalize each device profile with a background skin to help you differentiate between devices when you're using the remote. Since I usually have my iPod touch with me, the FLPR remote just means there's one less device I'll have to carry. And if it works with the iPad, I'll be doubly happy.
wired get a pre-programmed database of 14,000 codes, the ability to learn any that aren’t already there, plus a macro function
The FLPR looks a lot better, although it is also $30 more, at $80. For this you get a pre-programmed database of 14,000 codes, the ability to learn any that aren’t already there, plus a macro function. This will let you press one button and have, say, the TV, home theater and DVD-player all switch on and go to the right settings. What isn’t any better is the interface, an ill-conceived and ugly mess. Contoured “buttons” sit atop hideous “skinned” backgrounds and closely mimic the already bad design of your physical remotes. This is surely an area where touch-screens could shine. Imagine something as simple as the new Windows Phone 7 interface, just plain squares with symbols. And where are our multi-touch, swiping gestures to skip and flip around music and movies?

macdirectory Huge code database, Intuitive layout and operation,Programmable macros....
The initial setup is incredibly simple. The app contains an extensive database of remote codes (over 46,000) from a wide variety of manufacturers for virtually any device that uses an IR controller including things like room lighting and draperies. Adding a device from the database is done with a few taps and a bit scrolling. I had the basic programming of most of our home theater system completed in just a few minutes. I could then customize each device, giving them a friendlier name and a more meaningful-looking icon. If I wanted to, I could give each device’s remote a unique skin, as well. The FLPR app also lets you build remotes from scratch. Because the remote code database can be updated through the App Store, it’s not very likely that you’ll need to do this very often for a new component. However, you may want to take advantage of this option to build a custom remote with all your most frequently used buttons assigned to your preferred devices.
macworld it’s refreshing to see interesting (and useful) products
One of the benefits of being the Macworld editor in charge of iPod and iPhone accessories is that I get to play with lots of gadgets. On the other hand, too often that means seeing the same basic product over and over...and over. So it’s refreshing to see interesting (and useful) products from vendors who are making an effort to think outside the box. In this video, I show you seven recent products that have stood out from the steady flow of me-too add-ons.

New Potato’s FLPR may be the iPhone/iPod Remote to rule them all: it’s packed with 14,000 codes that not only control TVs and set-top boxes but your house’s lights, drapes and more.

allthingsdigital a simple way to control your electronics on a gadget you already carry all the time
The FLPR’s simple setup made it a breeze to use, and each electronic device’s coded buttons appeared on the screen seconds after I selected the type of device and brand name. I chose icons to represent each device, like a TiVo-looking icon for my TiVo remote. FLPR used fun backgrounds (called skins) for each remote, including tie-dyed designs. If you don’t share a remote control with many other people and want a simple way to control your electronics on a gadget you already carry all the time, FLPR will be your best bet.
